Awe-Inspiring: Niagara Falls & The Maid of The Mist
She sails the mighty waters of Niagara Falls all summer long, the Maid of The Mist.

First launched in 1846, the Maid was a sidewheel steamboat ferry. A second steamboat ferry was added in 1854. There was no Maid of The Mist between 1861 and 1885 due to financial problems. But it returned in 1885 and was so successful that a sister ship was built in 1892, the same year that Niagara Falls New York was incorporated as a city. Beginning in 1885 until 1955, the third Maid of The Mist operated below Niagara Falls. In 1972, the latest 65-ton boat was put into service. There are several Maids, all create an exciting, awe inspiring ride through the gorge below the falls taking you right up to the edge of the thundering waterfall at the Canadian Falls.
